Re: Snowkiting NW Iowa
I am in eastern Nebraska and have made some trips up through NW Iowa. There is a little snow cover NE of Sioux city but the best snow is a little further north across the border into Minnesota. Worthington is the best for flat frozen lake and the wind almost always shows up there. Last Friday (Dec 17) the ice was 6 inches of black and 2 inches of white. Not bombproof, but the snowmobiles are running on it. The snow is windblown and hard packed but fairly smooth. It is perfect for light wind cruising. Just watch out for the middle of the lake where the geese have kept a small section open.
To find good snow, you need to get closer to Windom, MN. Timber Lake WMA, by Wilder, has some light grass that has trapped 8-16inches of powder. The grass is not that much of an issue since it is so light. The terrain is rolling with nothing too steep. Other WMA's have thicker grass that is difficult to get through. The best WMA's look like they would require a snowshoe hike to get to where you would want to kite.
For the best snow, Mankato, MN is perfect. I checked out Benson Park in North Mankato and it looks awesome. There is 8-22inches of powder on the flat, lots in the holes, and decent ammounts on the east and west mounds that make some decent terrain. There are some new trees, and some other hazards but you could have 6 kiters out there with out really having to scrunch up to the bad areas. I did not drill the ice on the new pond but it may be less thick than Worthington considering Mankato got so much more snow early. There is also a high tension power line to on the east side of the park that is blocked blocked by the mounds on the north side, but is in the way for long runs on the south side.
Mankato also has Mt. Kato, which is a nice hill to board on when there is no wind. They have like 3 park runs already set up, where as my local ski hill does not even have all of their runs open. If you go, go at night as the lift ticket is only like $26.
Let me know if you are heading out or find any good snow in NW Iowa. I like terrain and want to do powder, but I will happily do flat packed in light winds too.
